Title: Chapter 1, LAST LOOK

‘Has it really been this long?’ Kakashi asks himself as he slowly walks towards the village gate, eyeing the road ahead. ‘Long time..’ The streets look the same; even the air smells the same, but there is just this different aura radiating in every street corner. The people, whom he just knew back then by their faces, and not by their names, can still recognize him, nodding at him unsurely. ‘Same faces, but little older’ Kakashi could see the uncertainty on their faces. ‘Maybe they’re wonderin’ where I’d gone,or why I’m still alive after all these years.. Not coming back here.. And why I’m back now..’ Kakashi could hear the rustle of leaves in his ears. ‘Humm.. even that sounds the same..’ Kakashi could feel all the eyes of the people in the village in him now. ‘Maybe it was a bad idea to go through the gate where everybody could see me.. I should have used the roofs.. Humm.. But I don’t look like I’m battle-weary; I still look the same neh? Why’s all the fuzz?’ Kakashi quickly jumps to a nearby roof, thinking of continuing his “walk back home” there. ‘It couldn’t not be this long.. It seems like everything changed..’ But really, 4 years, 8 months and 21 days aren’t that long…

‘Today, it has been 4 years, 8 months and 21 days’. Iruka slowly marks his calendar with a red pen. ‘Has it really been THAT long?’ Iruka asks himself as he lifts his mug, taking the last sip of coffee before going to school. ‘This day would be a very long day..’ But what the heck, every day was a long day for him, and he always feel too exhausted and drained after. He clumsily plays the red pen in his hands. ‘Maybe I should stop this, stop counting the days, as Kurenai-chan always suggests, but I just can’t help it..’ Iruka looks at his red pen and reluctantly eyes the trash bin. ‘This would be a long day..’ Iruka slams the door behind him, making all the red pens in the trash bin shake, as if struggling to get out.

“Finally! Kakashi-kun!” Tsunade-sama eagerly claps her hands, and eyes the jounin in between signing mission reports.

“Nah, Hokage-sama, it was just that a man needed my help, I just don’t have the heart to—“ Kakashi says as he scratches his head in confusion on why the hokage wasn’t all too surprised to see him there, in her office, just got back after 4 years.

“Enough with the excuses, jounin. Hand me in your report. After that, go to Shizune-chan, she’ll check you out for any injury, then go home. I’m sure your futon misses a warm body against it.”

“Maaa, hai!”

Tsunade-sama just couldn’t believe what Ibiki-san had said to her that day. It was like hearing something so impossible and stupid, but you felt it deep in your heart, that it was true. ‘Hokage-sama, at last, we’d found him. He’ll be back here in a week.’

Iruka, again, stares off to space while writing his lecture in the blackboard. ‘Naah, what’s that? It feels like, something.. Or someone..’ He shakes his head to clear impossible thoughts in his mind.

“Iruka-sensei, is there something wrong?” a student of his asks. “No, nothing, Ayame-chan..” Iruka assures his student as he continues to write on the blackboard. ‘Haii, what is up with today..?’

Kakashi closely looks at his face in the mirror. ‘I still look the same.. humm.. Maybe that’s why Tsunade-sama was not really surprised.’ He quickly turns the faucet, and a sudden gush of water comes out. ‘Except that I’ve grown my hair longer, and.. my eyes seems.. blood shot..’ He steps in the shower and turns the shower knob. ‘A nice shower might be good.. then sleep.. then.. I wonder what he looks like right now..’ Kakashi dreamily closes his eyes and remembers every little detail of the face he just couldn’t forget.

Iruka ends the class, and steps out of the classroom with a heavy feet. He quickly turns to the corner and just stands there for a minute, or so. ‘I don’t know what this is, but I feel something.. My heart.. It hurts.. It was just like when..’ Iruka runs his hand through his hair, and forgets that it isn’t that long as before. ‘So stupid, it’s like I’ve cut it for 2 years now, and kept it like this, short. Even with your own hair, Iruka, you’re just a baka—‘ Iruka closes his eyes and remembers that day when he finally cut his hair. Before that, he’d grown it longer than the usual, and he did not wear a ponytail, it was after a year since.. Then 2 years ago, he decided to cut it, and kept it short until this time. At first, he looks everyday at the mirror, judging himself cruelly on how badly he looked, but gradually, people got use to it, he got use to it, and what the hell, he’s not here anymore to refrain him from cutting his hair. Iruka closes his eyes once more as he felt a hot tear slowly trickling down his cheeks.

Kakashi steps nervously on the last landing of the stair. ‘I hope he’s still here.. But I also hope that he had moved out.. It’s been what? Years, when he was here.’ Kakashi holds on to the rail for support because he feels like he’s wobbling. ‘Stupid, Kakashi, don’t wobble on me now! All you got to do is knock on the door—‘ Kakashi stops short as he feels a charka-signature too familiar not to recognize.

“K-kakashi-ss-an..?”

Kakashi quickly turns on his feet, eyeing the owner of the all-too-familiar charka-signature, who, apparently just got home.

“Hi there, Iruka-san.. Long time, no see..” Kakashi greets, as he reluctantly raises his hand to a wave, smiling down, his eyes on arc.

"Why do you always do that? eversince the snow began.."

Iruka finally stopped what he was doing. "Because, my dad, mom and I used to do this back in the days when you know, whenever the snow began to fall.."

"O.." Kakashi's cold stare quickly turned into a warm gaze to Iruka.

"So that's why.. "

"Aha.. So how do you do it?"

"You want to try it?!" Iruka laughingly asked Kakashi.

"Yeah, I think it's fun.." Iruka saw a blush forming fast on the visible part of his lover's masked face. "But you said I'll get germs in this! Hihi!" Iruka continued to laugh.

"Oh, well, got to try it, besides I like gross stuff--hey! Just tell me how'd you do it!

Snowflakes are indeed sweet. But this is weird. Okay, really weird. But really, look who's talking. Hihi. KAkashi thought as he smirked to himself.

“Iruka..” Kakashi called out as he entered their apartment and stepped out of his sandals.

“’Ruka.. I’m home..”

‘That’s strange.’
Iruka should be home right now. Iruka told Kakashi that morning that he’ll not be manning the mission desk this afternoon, to hastily prepare some Christmas stuff left to be done, for tomorrow, Christmas day. Iruka even hinted out that he needs help—Kakashi’s help to be exact—of course, Kakashi couldn’t just let his Iruka down, not with those cute eyes and pouting lips. So, this afternoon, he dismissed the three brats early and practically raced back home.

“’Ruka..” Kakashi continued to call out as he made his way into the living room.

Sniff. Sniff. ‘What’s that smell?’ It was like something’s burning.

His gaze automatically shifted to the Christmas tree they’ve put up about a week ago. He told Iruka that day that he thinks that the Christmas lights they’ll be using in the tree was quite a bit of defective. It could a start a fire and make their home an instant bonfire for the cold holiday season. But Iruka talked him out of his “crazy idea” by telling him that the lights once belonged to Iruka’s family. And with that, Kakashi felt so stupid and knew Iruka must have been hurt. Putting up something else in the bedroom and unmade Christmas tree in the morning were all Kakashi could think of for a sorry. Kakashi just can’t help but smile as he remembered how Iruka forgave him that night.

So, back with the Christmas lights..

Kakashi came closer to the tree and inspected the lights more thoroughly. Obviously, it was not on fire because it still wasn’t flickering. It was still 5:30 in the afternoon and Iruka must have not lighted it yet. Speaking of Iruka..

“Iruka.. Where are you? And what’s that smell? It’s not the Christmas lights, I’ve already checked it—“

Kakashi stopped on his tracks, when he saw Iruka. Sitting on the kitchen floor, holding something quite dark (Kakashi couldn’t really make out what it was) and obviously have been crying.

“Iruka..” Kakashi called out softly, crouching beside his lover and ignoring the strong burning smell that have been, apparently, coming from here.

“What are you doing here, love? What happened?” Kakashi asked as he stroked Iruka’s hair.

“’Kashi! You’re here! It’s still early—“Iruka finally replied, looking at Kakashi, as if finally breaking out from a trance.

“I’ll be helping you out, remember? But baby, why are you crying? And what’s that you’re holdin’?”

Iruka quickly turned away his gaze from Kakashi and suddenly hid that “something quite dark” away from Kakashi’s sight.

“No.. Nothing.. And I’m not crying, just the smoke earlier.. Got into my eyes..”

Kakashi knew Iruka was lying. Iruka’s eyes were puffy and red, obviously crying for some time now and over something bad, and not from the smoke.

“And why’s that? Why the smoke? Did something wrong happen?” Kakashi played on with the lie.

“No, nothing.. Just—“

“C’mon, tell me, love..” Kakashi said as he cupped Iruka’s face into his hands, and started to kiss Iruka’s eyes, nose, cheeks, and lips.. God, he really hates it when Iruka’s crying like this.

Sniff. “Oh, ‘Kashi, because.. This.. I tried to bake you.. This!” Iruka shoved that “something quite dark” unto Kakashi’s hands.

“O, what’s this?” Kakashi asked as he raised that “something quite dark”, carefully scrutinizing the obvious guilty party for the burning smell.

“O..” Iruka blushed. So cute, Kakashi thought, but he still doesn’t know what it is, or what it was.

“That’s... You...”

“Me?” Kakashi pointed to himself.

“Yeah, you.. O well, it’s a cookie, or it was a cookie.”

“Aha, a cookie...” Kakashi eyed the cookie. It looked all so burnt and charred, but yeah it somehow resembled him. He could see the outline of his mask.

“Well, you know, that’s one of the Christmas stuff I want to do, cookies of all of you, and the cookie of you just got.. You know, burnt and charred..” Sniff.

“So why the tears, baby? You can make another one, you know.. That’s ok..” Kakashi made his way to hug Iruka.

But Iruka uncomfortably shifted on Kakashi’s arms and retrieved the “cookie” from Kakashi’s hand, and threw it on the floor.

“But, but, it’s a bad omen!” Iruka shouted as he continued on his crying again.

Kakashi momentarily got lost and thought about what Iruka had just said. 'Bad omen? Why? What does it have to do with his “cookie” being burnt and charred?’

“You see, you’ll be leaving for a mission in a week and when I saw that “cookie” being burnt and charred, and all that, I just couldn’t help but to think..”

‘O..’ Kakashi remembered. His heart melted. So that’s the reason why his dolphin has been crying. Kakashi smiled.

“But baby, that’s only a D-class mission with the brats—“

“But, but anything could happen! You couldn’t just say that’s a D-class mission! You always have to be careful!” Iruka shouted over his tears, clutching Kakashi’s wrist and shaking Kakashi quite vigorously.

“Easy.. Easy, now, baby.. I know, I know.. I’ll always be careful, we will always be careful.. For you.. So don’t worry..” Kakshi kissed Iruka’s forehead.

“I just don’t want you getting back home looking like that!” Iruka gave the “cookie” a look that can definitely kill someone.

Kakashi picked up the “cookie” and ate it.

“H-What?! ‘Kashi, that’s already dirty! Eewww!”

“So? The “cookie” had been bad, and besides, that’s meeh—I’m dirty” Kakashi laughed as he munched the cookie harder, ignoring the bitter taste, and lunged himself into Iruka.

“O..”

“Thank you, thank you for that “cookie”, for your concern, for everything.. Love you, ‘Ruka..”
Iruka’s heart just went jelly. “Of course, baby.. And I’m sorry “you” turned out burnt and charred, and for being so paranoid..”

Kakashi held Iruka closer in his arms, nuzzling his lover’s neck. “That’s ok babe.. So.. You want to bake another meeh..? Or you want you? Or you want..?” Kakashi licked Iruka’s inner earlobe. He felt his lover tingled; he knew it was a sensitive spot.

“Kakashi.. Oh.. No, we have so much work to do! No, no.. hihi..” Iruka giggled as he tried to avoid Kakashi’s lips.

“Oh.. You giggled.. Hehe, I heard you.” Kakashi’s visible eye went arc, ready to scoop Iruka up in his arms.

“No I did not! And seriously, Kakashi.. We have—“

“Ok, ok.. So you want to bake more cookies—“Kakashi stopped as he noticed Iruka fell silent.

“What baby, still upset?” Kakashi asked Iruka, eyeing the dolphin with such concern eyes.

“No, nothing, I’m just glad I’ll be spending this Christmas with you..”

Kakashi smiled down on his lover. “That’s sweet baby..” Kakashi pinched Iruka’s nose, just above the scar. “Yeah, me too.. Merry Christmas, baby..”

“Love you, ‘Kashi.. and Merry Christmas..” Iruka mumbled as they sealed their greeting with a kiss.
